a Here s a description of a typical Malmö woman who lived through the turn of the 20th century: Born Liatorp, Kronoberg County in 1868. In her late teens, she moved to Malmö to find a better life. Worked in the textile industry at Manufakturaktiebolaget and Malmö Yllefabriks Aktiebolag, among other factories. Married to manual worker Vilhelm, she would have a total of nine children. Widowed at age 43. Spent her later years living in a one-room apartment in Palmgatan 19. This is a summary of the life of Thilda Engström, who, despite some trying circumstances, lived to the age of 95. The house she lived in stood here, and was demolished in 1964 (the year after her death). The property built on this site went on to house the Swedish Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) for many years. b This is a notice from the Social Democrat affiliated Arbetet newspaper in 1906 that illustrates the impact of poverty in this area. Here s the English translation: From the general public to those who are willing to make sacrifices. A worker by the name of Karl Lindahl, resident in Palmgatan, Sofielund, has been taken into Lund hospital after a long and very difficult illness. He has not been able to recover from his illness and his doctor has prescribed a stay in a sanatorium to regain his health. However, a shortness of sanatorium places means that this isn t possible. The man in question, who isn t a member of a health insurance association and has 3 young children, has had to apply for poverty relief [ fattigvård : the old Swedish equivalent of the poor laws and poorhouses]. His position is especially hard because he fell ill immediately after the long industrial action and strike in the building industry. Therefore, I dare to pray to those who consider themselves as having enough to be able rescue Lindahl, to send me a message. Additionally, it should be noted that the man s lifestyle is impeccable. Jöns Andersson, Storgatan 19, Sofielund c The house on the right was owned for a period in the 1990s by the Hell s Angels motorcycle club. In October 1996, a bomb planted by their rivals, The Bandidos, was detonated. The house was destroyed and a number of windows were smashed in the surrounding area.
