Sofielunds Folkets hus

Gamla Sofielund school, designed by Salomon Sörensen, was completed in 1902.

Gamla Sofielund school, designed by Salomon Sörensen, was completed in 1902. The 12 classrooms here were filled by the children from the local area. In room 3 you would have found class 3C this group finished their six-year primary education in 1924. The teacher's name was Johan A Forsell. The classes were large, we count 28 students in this picture. The building operated as a school for 80 years, before it was designated for demolition. When city officials noticed the need for rehearsal rooms for young people, it changed its plans, renamed the building "Dundret" (a nickname for the neighborhood) and opened it up for youth groups . This era lasted for about ten years before the building was again threatened with demolition. The old school was saved once again, and resurrected as Sofielunds Folkets Hus a community meeting space with a cafe that hosts a variety of clubs and societies.
