Sofielund s old primary school sat beside an allotment site, Thulekolonin, which was set up in the 1910s. The city of Malmö acquired the land in 1923, and earmarked it for future expansion of the school. It took a quarter of century for the expansion to take place Nya Sofielundsskolan ( The New Sofielund School ) was completed in 1949. Designed by Sture Fröl n, it s an example of the nyrealism architecture style that was popular in Sweden at the time. On opening, it was Sweden s largest school the dining room could seat 800 students. The bronze statue by the entrance is called The Magnifying Glass , and was made by Gustav Nordahl in 1953. One of the school s most notable former students is the adventurer Renata Chlumska. She was the first Swedish woman to climb Mount Everest. Photograph: Malmö stadsarkiv
