Salong Caluff ́s

Caluff s Salon opened in 1987. Founder Jens Hallberg, himself gay, describes how it came about: I made some attempts to apply for jobs at salons in Malmö, and was disappointed at how timid and uniform everything was. I had a trial at one place they thought I did a great job, but said that I didn t fit in there. They thought I was deviating from their style, and that I was probably going out to completely different places than they were. (Yes, I went to much gayer places!). I thought that kind of environment would be intolerable, so I knew that I would have to open my own place, where we d cut and style hair the way that the customers actually wanted them, instead of doing what was being dictated by daft fashion trends. I wanted to work with styles that were really cool, and thought it was important that the salon could be a meeting place too. The 20-year-old version of me was extremely confident about what was actually cool, and I was pretty uninterested in putting labels on things. I was so happy about the diversity of what became my clientele, and also about having the opportunity to style hair in a way that would make other hairdressers turn away in disgust!
