Malmö featured in the 1588 version of Braun and Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Atlas of Cities of the World). It s one of the oldest known illustrations of the city, and it shows a number of mills in front of some lakes in the area that would later become Triangeln and Möllevången (the area was known as österwången back then). By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the industrial capitalist Frans Suell had acquired a lot of the land here. The land wasn t built on until the early 20th century. The square was laid out from 1901 to 1904, and most of the buildings surrounding it were completed in 1906. The large statue in the square, Arbetets ära (The Honour of Labour), was inaugurated in 1931. Photograph: Jeanette Rosengrens samling
