Ekströms skomakeri

That s a shoemaker standing in his doorway greeting us. The door has been built over and the building has been significantly altered since the photograph was taken. Malmö's great Art Nouveau architect Oscar Hägg designed the building, which was completed in 1906. The stucco depicts, among other things, a vigilant owl and a cat playing with a ball of yarn. It was a beautiful facade, but the small apartments behind it were nothing special they lacked amenities and had an outdoor toilet in the backyard. The building originally had 34 one- and two-room apartments. In 1976, the balconies were taken down and most of the decorative facade was removed. Apartments were merged, and 34 became 19.
