Södervärns vattentorn

Södervärn's water tower was designed by city architect Salomon Sörensen.

Södervärn's water tower was designed by city architect Salomon Sörensen. 54 metres high, it was inaugurated in 1916 and replaced both the Kirseberg water tower and Pildammstornet. When it was completed, Sofielund could finally be connected to the municipal water network. The tower stayed in use until 2015. In the first photograph, you can see a splash pond in front of the tower. Known locally as Söderhavet (the Southern Sea), it was a magnet for young people in the summer take the tram to Sofielund! Looking at the tower today, you can still see a a brighter section on one side, just under its copper roof. It stems from an incident in April 1983, while the roof was being repaired. A man climbed up the scaffolding with a can of paint and a brush. He then painted, "MURDER CARS HATE DATA" on the side of the tower (it doesn t really make much sense in Swedish either). The text had to be blasted away, and the impact is still, just about, visible today.
