Järnvägsövergången

From 1874, when the railway between Malmö and Ystad was opened, trains ran along what is now Lönngatan, and effectively divided the area into North and South Sofielund. In the photograph, you can see the raised barriers they would be brought down for passing trains and the car traffic would have to patiently wait. On the building, you can see a company name, Oskar Persson. The words down the sides of the door would give Swedish speakers a good idea of their line of business. Kött is the Swedish word for meat, and fläsk is pork. Oscar Persson is mentioned in östen Warnerbring s evocative tribute to the city, When Malmö Smelled (the song title sounds a lot better in the original Swedish När Malmö Doftade). Warnerbring was a celebrated singer, composer, and Eurovision Song Contest winner, born in Malmö in 1935. Here s a translation of some the lyrics: But among all the scents that had something, certainly I ve saved the best for last Oskar Persson came by on his magnificent horse In his butcher shop on wheels Then Malmö smelled, I don t forget, Of sausages and liver pate Then all the people smiled it felt good to be In Malmö, on a completely normal day
