Under the name Mon Bijou , this was an open-air restaurant from 1810, surrounded by shady plain trees and a lush park. It was popular place, even frequented by royalty, who came to eat, drink, and listen to musicians. With the outbreak of cholera in 1850, it was transformed into a hospital to treat victims of the disease. Malmö's population rose markedly in the 1870s which prompted further change the space was converted into a primary school. In 1921, the property was condemned by the health authorities and the students were moved into the newly built Sorgenfriskolan. City councillors had wanted to lease the building as a shelter for the poor, but instead a secondary school was rebuilt in its place. Photograph: Malmö City Archive
