Malmö Gay Radio began life in Ken Paine's wardrobe on Stenbocksgatan in 1980.
Malmö Gay Radio began life in Ken Paine's wardrobe on Stenbocksgatan in 1980. However, since the transmitter had a range of only ten metres, they soon got out of the closet! They rented space in Radio MCB's premises, before getting their own specially built studio in RFSL's basement on Jöns Filsgatan 2 they later moved into the party rooms so that the studio could double up as a DJ booth. Ken was the licence holder, broadcast technician, carpenter, and interviewer of English speakers. Guests on the station included Shere Hite, Tom Robinson, and Divine the latter interviewed at a gig at KB in Malmö. A former chairwoman of RFSL Malmö says: Radio MGR is worth mentioning. We did a good job of making people feel less lonely. Some people would even take their car and drive out into the woods so they could listen without being detected."
