Liberation and Paradise

This is a church with a notable history around LGBTQI issues.

This is a church with a notable history around LGBTQI issues. In 1990, the Malmö-Lund branch of the Ecumenical Group for Christian Homosexuals (now better known as EKHO) held its first liberation mass here, led by the Bishop of the Lund Diocese. These events have since developed into Rainbow Masses (regnbågsmässar), which are held at churches throughout Sweden and which emphasise every person s equal worth. In 2019, an altarpiece named Paradiset initially described as the first LGBTQ-friendly altarpiece was given to the church by the photographer / artist Elisabeth Ohlson. Two weeks later, however, the work was taken down. It was argued that the altarpiece could be perceived as transphobic, because the garden s snake often associated with evil was being held by a trans person. Others pointed out that it was against Christian doctrine to portray the serpent as good.
