Brewing had already been the family business for generations when Malmquists Bryggeriaktiebolag purchased a site and moved their business here in 1898. Fourteen years later, they were one of five Malmö breweries that merged to become AB Malmö Förenade Bryggerier, stepping up beer production from small-scale craftsmanship to large-scale industry. Oak barrels were replaced with enamel casks, and wooden stoppers made way for more modern variants. Drinks company Apotekarnes Vattenfabrik (literally, The Chemists Water Factory) moved here from the city centre, and were given the opportunity to produce Coca Cola under license in 1953. The business unsurprisingly expanded, and built new premises in 1961. Pripps bought the company shortly afterwards. The smell affected the students at Heleneholms school, opposite. Keeping the windows open during production was almost impossible.
