In the 1880s, the Swedish health service made it clear that Malmö s main hospital, located at Slottsgatan, was not of an acceptable standard. A new, modern hospital was needed. A site was chosen in 1890 (it remains the location of Malmö s hospital today), and it was decided that a pavilion-style system would be appropriate. This meant that instead of building one massive hospital, a series of smaller buildings would be constructed close to each other. The site was designed with space for more buildings, in case more services were required in the future. The budget for the entire project including hospital buildings, stable buildings, ice houses, bathtubs and toilets added up to 360,000 Swedish kronor. Salomon Sörensen was commissioned to plan and sketch the site. The main entrance from Sodra Förstadsgatan is the only part of the site that remains from his original design.
