The Fish Market has been a very important place historically, for several reasons: At first it was called Spruttomten - literally "Sprayer's Yard", since there was a well here used by the town's firemen since it could be counted on never running dry. The fire department back then depended on volunteer firefighters, and there was no proper fire engine to speak of until the 1920s. Instead they started out hitching a "fire cart" with the necessary equipment to a horse. For a while they used a gravel truck with equipment mounted on a platform attached to it - then the firefighters hurried towards the fire at breakneck speed, which at the time meant around 15 kilometres an hour. Women in the area also took advantage of this well that never ran dry - thanks to which they could wash clothes and bedlinen outside any time they needed. Think about this when you take a closer look at the little statue on the square! After the fire department was modernized, and more buildings got communal washing rooms in the basement, the square became a fish market. Fish was sold here rather than on the main square because of the rather distinct smell that came with the goods.
