The Train Station

Today, being able to travel across the Skåne region in an hour or so is a given - but before the railway was finished your only option was pretty much to go by horse-drawn carriage, which could take several days. So you can imagine that when the railway to Hässleholm was finished in 1860 and going down to Malmö suddenly only took around three hours, it was seen as something truly revolutionising. The importance of the railway for Hässleholm as a city can hardly be overstated: Thanks to the railway people started moving here in increasing numbers. Hässleholm became an important travel hub, with many hotels despite its modest size, and a bustling city centre market. That the railway station ended up being built here rather than somewhere else along the tracks wasn't pure coincidence however - the aristocratic Ehrenborg family donated some of the land belonging Hässleholmsgården , a manor in their possession. The railway station has been remodeled and expanded several times. The first picture is a very old photography, from the 1860's, taken soon after it was built. The second picture depicts the station after its expansion during the 1920's, and as you can see in the third picture things have changed inside as well. The fourth picture shows a famous actor called Edvard Persson, visiting Hässleholm. He was famous during the 1930's and 1940's, and was often cast as a infallibly jovial and down to earth - qualities that in a Swedish context are still in many ways associated with people in Skåne, perhaps thanks to Edvard Persson.
