Even though Hässleholm was still waiting for the decision on whether it would actually be granted city status, officials felt an urgent need for an elegant City Hotel . So urgent in fact, that they started building the hotel despite a rather worrying radio silence from the national authority responsible for the decision... The reason for this radio silence was that the government's initial response to Hässleholm's initial request included a list of financial commitments that would go along with becoming a city. Suffice to say, it was not cheap. Hässleholm's officials refused the proposed terms, and responded with a counter offer. Months passed with no word from Stockholm. When almost a year had passed, everybody started getting rather nervous - perhaps starting to build the city hotel was too much of a gamble after all... On the 19th of December, a short message was received from Stockholm - Hässleholm's application was approved! And so it was, that Hotel Statt opened its doors on January 1st, 1914 - the same day that Hässleholm's inhabitants woke up in their beds for the first time as proper city folk.
