In 1916, Vingarne ( The Wings ) was shown at the Metropolteatern cinema. It previously stood here, but has since been replaced by a modern building. Vingarne is widely considered to be the world's first homoerotic film. It s based on Herman Bang's novel Mika l, about an artist's love for his young model. The artist creates a sculpture called The Wings that alludes to Greek mythology. According to the myth, Zeus takes the form of an eagle and swoops down to seize the young Ganymede with whom he had fallen in love. The film's director Mauritz Stiller, the set designer Axel Esbensen, and the actor Nils Asther (raised in Malmö) were all part of Stockholm's gay scene.
