Tintomara - Fyran (1978–2002)

Beyond the whitewashed gates and up the stairs, you could find Tintomara, which opened in 1978. It was a members-only club with a bell at the door. The venue had previously housed the porn cinema Venus, so the interior was dominated by red velvet. The name Tintomara was borrowed from the androgynous character loved by both men and women in C.J.L. Almqvist's 1834 novel The Queen's Diadem ( Drottningens juvelsmycke ). The club was later modernized and renamed Fyran. For decades, the club served as a breathing space for the queer community, offering drag shows and dancefloors. Like Gay House, the club was subjected to homophobic attacks including Molotov cocktails thrown into the entrance.
