From 1897 to 1927, the barracks for the Crown Prince's Hussar Regiment were located around here. The Hussars' attitude towards homosexuality was marked by ambivalence. Stories from the first half of the 20th century suggested that they would have sex for money to make up for their poor finances. It also seems that they would rob or blackmail homosexuals after luring them with sex. This was known as "twisting" or "driving gay", and happened fairly frequently and not just among the Hussars.
