Gay House was founded by Lars Hector in 1971. A gay club, it had a large visible sign outside, which was brave for the time. It was well attended, with singer/artist/local-legend Merry Lou often behind the bar. However, it was regularly targeted by homophobic pickpockets, and attacks by local thugs intensified on Good Friday 1978. The club was stormed several times, and homophobes smashed up the interior and poured petrol on the floors. The police arrived, but couldn t prevent the building being set alight.
