Sofielundsgården

Here you can see the south facade of Sofielundsgården's main building.

Here you can see the south facade of Sofielundsgården's main building. The land reform of 1786 (the first of many in Skåne, through to the 19th century), saw the villages here essentially demolished. They were replaced with individual, contiguous plots with a cottage in the middle each family would now farm their own land rather than contributing to the old, more communal type of agriculture. Governor Tage Thott was assigned property in the far west of this area, in what was then called ängavången. Here, Thott worked 150 acres of farmland. In 1792, it was bought by the merchant Hans Bauert and renamed Sofielund, after his wife Sophia Charlotta af Trolle. Several buildings were erected on the farm, and a six-acre park was created. b Hans Bauert died in 1802 and Sophia af Trolle in 1805. After that, merchant Per Jacobsson bought the land, selling it on in 1823. In the summer of 1837, the renowned bishop and future academy member Johan Henrik Thomander hired Sofielund, and often gathered his friends together here for food and drink in the rural environment. Ownership continued to regularly change hands, until the city of Malmö became purchased it. The main building was demolished in 1953, although some details were saved and sent to a museum: two round earthenware-tiled stoves, wood panelling, a stair railing, doors, fittings, and the fire insurance certificate! This picture was taken around 1930.
