The pond is as old as the park it was part of the original 30,000 m2 private park built by the Suells in 1806-07. Generously, the park was open to the public without walls or fences. The pond in front of the main building was clearly inspired by the mirror pool outside the Palace of Versailles. Its construction was a welcome task for a group of otherwise unemployed ex-soldiers. It was perhaps at its most beautiful around the beginning of the 20th century, when it was illuminated by several hundred coloured lights.
