On the left of the photograph, you can see Malmö s craft guild (Malmö Hantverksförening), which was designed in 1916 by the prolific architects Ewe and Melin. To the right of the church opposite where Malmö Art Gallery currently stands lies the Johannes colonies (Johanneskolonierna). These were established in 1909 to provide both housing and leisure. Every colony (there were about 60 in total) comprised a small cottage and garden area, bordered with a small fence. The cottages would often have ornamental door and window frames in the snickarglädje style (snickarglädje literally means carpenter s delight ). The greenery you can see behind the fences on the right are likely the result of the hard work of the residents and visitors there. This all came to an end when Pilgården was built in 1943. Pilgården, which housed a restaurant and bowling alley, was inaugurated by prime minister Per Albin Hansson. The building still stands here today. Photograph: Jeanette Rosengren s collection
