When Jan Johansen came to Malmö in the spring of 1995 it was not only to hit the shops at the Triangeln shopping mall. He was in town to compete in Melodifestivalen, the event that decides Sweden s entry to Eurovision, with the smooth ballad Se på mig. The song had been coauthored by Ingela Pling Forsman, one of Swedens most prominent songwriters. No less than 40 of her songs have competed in Melodifestivalen, and when Jan Johansson sang Se på mig she had already won the contest with one of the most loved bangers to come out of Sweden in the 80 s - Bra vibrationer- sang by Kicki Danielsson in 1985. This year was once again her year - Jan Johansen scored 64 points from the Malmö Opera stage - enough to win the competition. Except for Johansen, four other winers of Mello have been selected at the Malmö Opera. In 1988 Tommy Körberg won with Stad i ljus Although it only managed twelfth place at Eurovision in Dublin, this song has remained extremely popular in Sweden and is now in the Church of Sweden s official hymnbook. In 1991 Carola won with Fångad av en stormvind . This was Carola s second Melodifestivalen victory (she also won in Malmö in 1983) and this time she went all the way, winning Eurovision in Rome later that year. In 1998 Jill Johnsson won with "Kärleken är". To date, this is the last Swedish Eurovision song with lyrics in Swedish - which were also written by Ingela Pling Forsman. In 2001 Friends won with "Listen to your heartbeat". Although somewhat overshadowed by accusations that it plagiarized Belgium s 1996 Eurovision entry, the distance från the Opera stage to Eurovision was not long that year, as the Olsen Brothers had won the contest the preceding year with Fly on the wings of love. Hence Friends could simply cross the newly inaugurated öresund bridge and compete in Copenhagen - where they finished on fifth place. Click here to see Johansens 1995 entry!
