In 2019, the Malmö Pride parade passed what was then the gay hang-out BeeBar. The Liberal Party took part in the parade, with Barbro Westerholm at the front. This was commented on in an Instagram post: "People of all ages pointed, took photographs, and waved to her, but when we walked past Malmö's BeeBar and spectators began to cry when they saw Barbro, it became even clearer what a hero she is and how much her work means to people. Following a demonstration in 1979, when homosexuals occupied the stairways of the National Board of Health and Welfare, Westerholm, in her capacity as Director General of the board, ensured that homosexuality would no longer be defined as a disease. She has been praised several times for this and her other efforts in promoting the rights of LGBTQI people.
