As a young man, John Henrik Thomander (1978-1865) worked as a private tutor alongside his religious studies, and while doing so he met Emilie Meyer (1811-1890). Emilie was the only daughter of a wealthy family and John Henrik was the son of an unmarried mother. He charmed Emilie through extensive correspondence culminating in a letter in which he proposed, with these words: I make a great request of you, dear Emile, the greatest that a mortal can make, and I have thought deeply about what I am asking when I make it. I am able to offer boundless affection: have the courage to accept it. Despite the differences in their backgrounds and social standings, Emilie s father accepted the marriage. They wed and moved into Paradisgatan in Lund. John Henrik climbed upwards throughout his career, while Emilie took care of the house. Her interests went beyond household chores to include reading and learning, but these were not considered appropriate for a woman in the 19th century. The Thomanders house was moved into Kulturen in 1925.
