Lund is one of the country s most attractive student cities and has one of Scandinavia s broadest ranges of education, based on cross-border and leading research, with around 46,000 students and just over 8,000 employees. Lund University is repeatedly ranked as one of the world s foremost institutions of higher education. Helgo Zettervall was commissioned to build the new university building, which was inaugurated in 1882. The university s old name, Regia Academia Carolina, stands high up on the facade. Today, the building is missing some of its original details, including four large female figures that stood on either side of the entrance. The female figures were meant to represent the four faculties at the time: Theology, Medicine, Law, and Philosophy. In front of the University Main Building stands a grand fountain. The frogs that adorn the fountain and spout water have long been called the faculty frogs.
