Kyrkogatan, 1890s

This photograph is from the 1890s.

This photograph is from the 1890s. If you were here at the start of the 19th century you would have seen more of the buildings visible in the left and centre of the photograph. Back then there was a row of two-storey, half-timber houses with light facades and large gardens between each house. The building on the right was constructed in 1876 by the builder J. H. Mortensen at a time when large, grand houses were appearing along Kyrkogatan. The brick building is dekanhuset (the dean's house), which was erected in the 13th century and rebuilt several times. In 1908 it was moved to Kulturen, where it remains today. On the left of the photograph, you can see part of Professor Erik Gustav Lidbeck's residence (built near the end of the 18th century). Lidbeck was a botanist and a follower of the great Carl Linnaeus (aka Carl von Linn ).
