Hilma af Klint was part of the first generation of female artists to be accepted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (Kungliga Konstakademin). She had always had a spiritual nature and she held along with a group of friends gatherings and s ances to make contact with higher spirits. From these spirits, which they referred to as The High Masters , af Klint and her companions purportedly received messages which they put onto paper as abstract drawings, often while in a trance-like state. Together with her lifelong companion Thomasine, Hilma travelled extensively during the 1920s, often to study anthropology and to further her spiritual quest. In 1933, when Hilma was 72, they moved to Lund and soon settled at 28 Grönegatan, where they lived a quiet life until Thomasine s death in 1940.
