In the picture we can see the statue of the city's founder, after which Karlskrona has got its proud name - King Charles XI (1655-1697). Karlskrona was founded in 1680 and the main reason was the need for an ice-free port for the Swedish fleet in the southern part of the Baltic Sea. This to protect the the newly added land areas Blekinge, Skåne, Halland and Bohuslän from the Danes. After careful consideration, the island of Trossö was chosen and the new city of Karlskrona was built here. What do you think the King would have said about the exotic palm trees surrounding him in the picture? And what does the man in the tailcoat, standing at the base of the pedestal, doing? Maybe he's looking for the treasure that is said to be buried under the statue? Photo: Blekinge museums archives
