The Hot Water Bath House

The hot water bath house opening in 1902 meant an instantaneous increase in living standards for people in Hässleholm.

The hot water bath house opening in 1902 meant an instantaneous increase in living standards for people in Hässleholm. As the name suggests, being able to take hot baths at will was very uncommon around that time - most people just washed themselves in lakes or rivers, which would have been more or less pleasurable depending on the season. The bath house was run by Christian Wahlqvist who is standing in the middle of the picture, surrounded by bath attendants. The attendants made sure that people behaved when in the bath house - for example there were strict rules about spitting, which was only to be done in special "spitting boxes" or in drains. The attendants also offered services such as scrubbing the backs of the establishment's patrons with very stiff brushes. A new swimming pool was built in 1970, and the old bath house was finally demolished and replaced by the building in front of you.
