1. Skanör City Hall
Sevärdhet1870
The city hall was finished in 1777. Not much has changed during the years, but the building has of course been renovated. The roof has been replaced, but with the same kind of beaver-tail bricks as the original. Leonard de la Rose was the mayor from 1752 up until his death in 1784. He was also a member of Parliament, combined Skanör and Falsterbo into one town, had the square set in stone, constituted a post office, amongst other things. This did not make him popular with the people in town. The vast majority wanted to abolish the city rights and get rid of the mayor and all of the work and costs he came with!

2. Falsterbo church
Sevärdhet1870
It is a big and spacious church. Built in the 14th century and of course annexed and renovated many times for nearly 700 years. During the 16th and 17th century both the church and town were completely flooded. The church was excavated several times, while the town was moved a couple hundred meters in from the shore. The rest of medieval Falsterbo still lies underneath the dunes. The church still has a few wooden sculptures from the chatolic times. Most impressive is Kristofferskåpet with a sculpture of St Kristoffer and paintings on the doors of his martyrdom.

3. Skanör’s Church
Sevärdhet1870
A hundred years separate the pictures, but the church looks mostly the same. It has looked almost the same for 600 years. The latest edition was the high altar. The church is originally from the 13th century. Some of the walls may be a bit older. The church has stood fast through wars, storms, fires, and floods. The four elements have not been particularly merciful towards Skanör, but the church has stood its ground in all types of weather.

Sevärdhet1870
The old vicarage burned to the ground in 1885 together with most of Skanör. The large lime-tree to the left is described by Linn on his trip through Skåne in 1749: Vicar Corvin had, outside his house, such a splendid, leaf and branch-filled lime-tree, that could be desired, and thereunder a small earth embankment, to pleasantly sit on beautiful summer eves.

7. Mellangatan before the fires
Sevärdhet1870
Here we can see down Mellangatan with the church at its back. The year is around 1870, before the big fires. All houses and farms in the picture burned down in 1885. The reason the fires could lay waste to such a large area can be seen in the picture. The houses leaned on each other, and when one house caught on fire the rest followed. A kind of domino effect.

Sevärdhet1873
Falsterbo lighthouse stood finished in 1795. It was designed by Olof Tempelman and was placed further out on the isthmus than the old lighthouse placement on Kolabacken. As can be seen on picture 4, there was an open fire in the tower at first. Today, it is surrounded by the golf course and a verdant grove, but on the first picture it is free from both golf balls and trees. The picture is from 1873 and is the oldest known photo from Falsterbo.

9. City gate and algae ditches
Sevärdhet1874
A city needs a wall, moat, or some other border to divide city and land. In Skanör and Falsterbo there was no stone and no timber. Instead, there were algae ditches. The word ditch comes from Dutch and means moat. During the years, the word has for some reason changed meaning, and it is now called algae moats . An algae moat consists of peat and algaes interspersed, not kelp algae since it rots, eelgrass is where it's at. There were 30 kilometers of algae moats on Falsterbonästet some time into the 1900s. Nowadays they are not maintained and have therefore collapsed.

11. A Skanör that disappeared
Sevärdhet1880
You are standing on the crossroad between östergatan and Kaptensgatan, looking north. The first picture shows the houses that burned down in 1885 in the foreground. But the white gable belongs to a new house that was built after the fire in 1874 and survived the big fire in 1885. One can sense the city hall and the church behind it. A building can be glimpsed in the graveyard as well. It was Klockargården that was torn down in the 1890s. Next picture. You'll have to turn around completely to see östergatan to the south. None of these estates survived the fire of 1885. The last picture is of a woodcut from 1879. We see the same part of östergatan as in the last picture, but the artist has managed to draw a weird gable on the estate to the left.

12. The beach hotel
Sevärdhet1896
The hotel was built back in 1897. It was the first establishment that turned to tourists in Falsterbo. A hotel and restaurant with music and an unbeatable location, just 50 meters from the beach. This is where the first summer guests arrived. That was before they had made their own villas. However, in the 1960s, things went sideways. The hotel stood and decayed. The municipality bought the whole thing and tore it down in the middle of the 70s.

The junction between Storgatan and Gamelgatan was a resting place for the stagecoach from Vellinge with a journey continuing to Malmö or further out into the world. In the house behind the stagecoach, on picture 2, the "warehouse" Wertheim was situated during its first years. A fire in 1911 led to the decision to invest in a new business building. 14. A sand filled Falsterbo
Sevärdhet1900
Around 1900 neither the squares or streets were set in stone. It was just regular sand, not even hardened. Deep tracks were created by the wagons that struggled to pull themselves through the streets. It was said the Falsterboians had a shuffling way of walking as they dragged their wooden slippers through the sand! In the next picture the square has changed, but it is still not set in stone. That most likely happened at the same time as the little fountain with the statue Gåsatös was installed in the summer of 1956.

Sevärdhet1901
Postcards were made of this picture for 60 years! One reason is probably the geese, but another is because the picture could never be taken again. The next picture shows the reason. Sevärdhet1902
Cows in the streets The picture shows Mellangatan seen from Hamngatan. However, Hamngatan does not continue down to the right towards the docks. To fix this, the little house to the right was torn down and they had to straighten out the road network. This explains why Claes Albert Landgren's house on the current corner to the right is the only one with straight corners, while the others are cut. The house simply wasn't a corner house when it was built.

Sevärdhet1902
The mill could have originated in the 16th century, but it has been rebuilt and renovated many times since. A beam has been dated back to around 1700. In any case it is one of Skåne's oldest mills. It is a stump mill. Basically, it is standing on a bearing "stump" so that all of the mill house "bellow" is facing the wind. These mills were succeeded during the 1800s by the so-called Dutchmen, where only the "bonnet" with the wings is turned towards the wind.

Hotel Falsterbo House was built by the railroad company in 1908. When it needed to expand in 1912 it became its own company Falsterbo Havsbad AB. The Restaurant Man Moje Björkman took over the company after a few years and made the House into something truly special. Nice rooms, good food, beach and swimming, tennis, riding, golf, concerts, the-dancing in the afternoons, balls, and more. It was all dancing on the ceiling and the high life. There have been several other owners since then. Many surely remember Lars Lendrops time in the 1960s. Today it is all residential areas, and silence has fallen over Falsterbo House.

Strandbaden opened during the summer of 1928 with both a dancefloor, restaurant, and slide. It cost 10 Swedish cents to ride the big one. You see, a mat was needed to sit on, or your behind would burn. Although young boys soon realized that when the orderly wasn t around one might as well go down the slide on a piece of algae! The junction between Hammargatan and Mellangatan. Back in the day the geese walked around freely in the streets of Skanör and Falsterbo. Today it is a bit more organized. Do not walk too close by when they have their younglings with them. They can be quite hostile towards people!

61. The typographer's sanatorium
Sevärdhet1940
When living at Malmö typographer's sanatorium, strict rules were to be followed. For example: 4. Books, magazines, and journals, which are to be handled with care, are not to be brought outside the locales of the Home, and shall at once after use be correctly folded and placed in its predetermined place. 10. It should be the point of honor of all guests not to depreciate the esteem of the Typograph Corps and the Home. The text was written when the house opened in 1952, and was probably old fashioned even then. It's as if it has been plucked out of Grönköpings weekly paper.

Sevärdhet1940
It is a private house today, but for a long time Solidar was the largest grocery store in Skanör. Even during the early 1900s a store named Coop existed. However, Solidar never managed to become Konsum before it was shut down. The competition from ICA became too big.

Byggnad1940
Doctor John af Klerker and his wife, professor Edla af Klerker, lived on the corner of Västergatan and Kyrkogatan in Skanör. After John and Edla passed away the estate was bequeathed to Akademiska Föreningen in Lund in 1938. When the students took over the estate the faithful servant of 24 years, Miss Emma Jönsson, came included as housekeeper. Her salary was paid through an amendment to the will.

Sevärdhet1950
The fisherman Karl Larsson and his wife bought the house in 1881. But since his wife died after a difficult childbirth in 1897 he was left alone with six children who all grew up here in the cottage. Except for a residence, this place has also been a preschool for poor children and a library. The library moved into the more spacious station house after the railroad s closure in 1971. Nowadays there is a gallery in the cottage. On the other two pictures, östergatan runs on the wrong side of the building. From here to the station back then there was no street, only a large meadow with a footpath.

77. Just regular water
Sevärdhet1960
Clean water has always been important. Before bacteria and germs were understood, water was life threatening to drink. You drank beer instead. The wells were often missing their "shell". Because of this all sorts of waste flowed into the wells when it was raining. This shell is for the cattle. For example, cows on their way back to the farm after grazing. There was also a watering hole for the animals in all villages. Often in the middle of the village. There are none left anymore in Skanör and Falsterbo. It was necessary especially for geese and ducks. You see, they can only mate in water!

Sevärdhet1970
Dykerigatan got its name from Dykerigården. Dykerikompaniet's task was to take care of wrecks, beached ships and its goods. Goods and timber were auctioned out and the company received their cut. The original building burned down in 1874. The current building is of a younger date. The second picture shows the estate to the left around 1910. 85. Skanörs kyrka
Kyrka
Kyrkan byggdes under medeltiden ut i etapper.

Ytterligare uppgifter saknas i registret.
Stenen står nedsatt i marken.
