City gate and algae ditches

A city needs a wall, moat, or some other border to divide city and land.

A city needs a wall, moat, or some other border to divide city and land. In Skanör and Falsterbo there was no stone and no timber. Instead, there were algae ditches. The word ditch comes from Dutch and means moat. During the years, the word has for some reason changed meaning, and it is now called algae moats . An algae moat consists of peat and algaes interspersed, not kelp algae since it rots, eelgrass is where it's at. There were 30 kilometers of algae moats on Falsterbonästet some time into the 1900s. Nowadays they are not maintained and have therefore collapsed.
