Kulturbolaget - then located here in Erikslust - held a unique Pogues gig on 6th November 1985 unique in that singer Shane MacGowan was absent and replaced for one night only by Elvis Costello. MacGowan wasn t at the show but he was in town, and busy making an enduring contribution to musical history. MacGowan was unavailable because he had been laid low by double pneumonia. That wasn t enough to contain his creativity though, and he spent the evening in a feverish state finalizing the lyrics to one of the greatest ever Christmas records, Fairytale of New York. The illness seemed to bring an extra dimension to the song. You get a lot of delirium and stuff, he later told the BBC, and I got a lot of good images out of that. Reports vary about whether he spent the evening in a hotel or a hospital, but next time you hear the line in the second verse, lying there almost dead on a drip in your bed, you can be pretty sure the bed in question was somewhere in these parts.
