When the police raided the Stonewall Inn (one of the busiest gay bars in New York) in June 1969, it triggered spontaneous demonstrations, police violence, and all-out rioting that lasted several days. The following year, the Gay Liberation Parade was held to commemorate the event. These events became an inspiration for homosexual liberation across the world. In May 1971, the Gay Power Club in örebro held Sweden's first such demonstration. In autumn the same year, the newly formed RFSL Malmö (The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Rights) initiated a demonstration with about 40 people marching from Club Max on östra Förstadsgatan to Stortorget, carrying placards with slogans like: "I am gay and proud", "We are the ones your mothers warned you about" and "Sexual equality".
