The Beatles head home

George Harrison and Paul McCartney got a lot of media attention when they visited Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for a weekend in October 1967. This photo shows them at the harbor in Malmö, on their way home after staying with the spiritual leader in Falsterbo Castle, south of the city. You can see young journalist Lena Rosendahl talking to George. She d spent the weekend trying to make contact with them and she got her chance at the very last minute, just moments before they stepped on the ferry to Copenhagen Airport. I hadn't thought about what to ask, I was just concentrating on catching up with them, she later told Sydsvenskan newspaper. I managed to ask, what are you doing right now? meaning are you recording an album or something like that. George s reply was typically laconic. "We are trying to get on board a boat, he said before doing precisely that. At the time, it was assumed the Paul and George were visiting the Maharishi for a weekend of meditation, but Peter Brown (the Beatles long-time personal assistant) told a different story in his memoir. He claimed the Maharashi had been negotiating a television series with a US network and promising that the Beatles would appear on the show. Brown thus brought Paul and George to Falsterbo to try and convince the Maharashi to stop using the Beatles for his own PR purposes.
