By summer 2003, Franz Ferdinand were getting some feverish attention from the British music press even though they had yet to release any records. So, producer Tore Johansson brought the band to Malmö and to Gula Studion so that they could record their debut album away from the spotlight. They even slept in the studio, says Gula co-founder Jens Lindgård, who engineered the record. We moved some beds in, and they lived here all through the recording. That meant they could rehearse day and night, and I really think it helped them come together as a band. Although they worked long hours, the band still found time to sample the Malmö summer. The studio got hold of some bikes for them and suggested they cycle down for a swim at Ribersborg beach. Unfortunately, drummer Paul Thomson didn t know how to ride a bike, so singer Alex Kapranos patiently taught him. They eventually made it to Ribban and learned something else about their drummer: he couldn t swim either. Alex ended up being Paul s swimming instructor that day too. And the debut album? It won the Mercury Music Prize and sold over 3.6 million copies worldwide.
