There has been an inn on this site since the Middle Ages. In the 1880s it became Hotell Horn, then was renamed the Savoy Hotel in 1902. It s had many notable guests over the years, everyone from Sammy Davis Jnr. to King Carl XVI Gustaf and, perhaps most remarkably, Lenin. He travelled through Malmö as part of his epic journey from Switzerland to Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution, and had time to pop into the Savoy for dinner. The communist revolutionary made a good choice, as the Savoy was known for its extravagant smorgorsbords. This description comes from Fritiof Nilsson Piraten s 1933 novel Bock i örtagård: It was a Monday in early spring. In the dining room of the old Hotel Horn in Malmö, the public sandwich table was set for supper Like a church in the middle of the village, the hexagonal silver brandy canteen stood with the six taps for the six varieties: Tenfold Renat, Cumin, Pomerans, Neumanns Akvavit, Blandning and Rehnbergs Sädes. From this center point, the schnapps glasses radiated, filling two quadrants towards the sides of the table .In the glass corners on either side of the canteen were placed the hams, one pickled and one boiled Following the brandy glasses were the salty things: seven types of herring, anchovies in a magnum jar, anchovies in a quartz chest, cold, fried pork and bird's nests. Then came the eel, smoked, grilled or boiled in jelly. And then dish after dish was added, plate after plate, like pieces in a pickle, where light green garnish leaves, green cucumbers and white gherkins, beetroot, herring salad red cheeses and cheeses in tinfoil formed the delicate element in the more colourful mass of cold cuts, pig's trotters, pickled veal and pickled pig's head, sausages, meatballs and minced steaks with onions... the table setting was nearing completion. The butler compared his pocket watch with the wall clock. Hotel Horn was ready to receive the supper guests. And they came in droves." The facade facing Hamngatan was built in 1914, for the upcoming Baltic Exhibition. Source: https://www.sydsvenskan.se/2017-04-12/hundra-ar-sedan-lenin-at-smorgasbord-pa-savoy/
