Hollywood star Nils Asther (1897–1981)
Nils Asther grew up in Malmö.
Nils Asther grew up in Malmö. His parents were merchant Anton Asther and his wife Hildegard. They lived in this house from 1900. As a young man, Nils moved to Stockholm where he met film director Mauritz Stiller. In 1916, Stiller would give him his breakthrough role in The Wings (Vingarne). In 1927, Asther tried his luck in Hollywood and became, like his friend Greta Garbo, a movie star. He appeared in about 70 films and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1988, his memoirs The Way of the Fool were published posthumously. Asther had relationships with women, but was also part of Stiller's "gay circle". It is thought that he had a long-term relationship with the sailor and actor Ken DuMain.
