In December 1947, the venerable Folkets Hus in Torpgatan (Sweden's first purpose built People s House) was replaced by a more modern structure on Nobeltorget.
In December 1947, the venerable Folkets Hus in Torpgatan (Sweden's first purpose built People s House) was replaced by a more modern structure on Nobeltorget. Designed by Hans Westman, it provided a space for political and trade union activities, as well as a theatre. Södra Teatern (the Southern Theatre) was home to a branch of Malmö City Theatre, and it was a popular venue through the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Specialising in comedies and revues, Swedish theatre luminaries like Karl Gerhard, Povel Ramel Maritta Marke and Zarah Leander all performed there. Since 2006, it s been home to Moomsteatern a theatre company noted for its work with actors with learning disabilities. Photograph: Jeanette Rosengrens samling
