Cornelis Vreeswijk’s long Malmö history

Dutch-Swedish singer, songwriter, actor and poet Cornelis Vreeswijk lived in Malmö for several spells throughout his eventful life. He was here in 1968 and 1969, for example, when he took the lead role of Tevje in Malmö City Theater's production of "Fiddler on the Roof". But it was 1971 when Vreeswijk really made a permanent imprint on the city s consciousness. That year he put on a well-remembered floor show at Kronprinsen and then became one of the highlights of the city s first Folkfesten, held at Slottsparken. The cultural impact of American festivals like Monterey Pop and Woodstock had been felt in Sweden and had prompted the Festen på Gärdet event in Stockholm in 1970. Folkfesten was Malmö s equivalent, and Vreeswijk produced the most enduring memory with his version of John Lennon s "Power to the people", reworded as Slottsparken ät folket" (that is, Slottsparken for the people ). He also found time to release, "Spring mot Ulla - spring! Cornelis sings Bellman". One of his most popular records, it s a collection of unconventional recitals of Carl Michael Bellman ballads. Bellman was, of course, the key figure in Sweden s ballad tradition, a tradition that Vreeswijk resurrected in the second half of the twentieth century, while imbuing it with social and political relevance. The photograph on the cover is taken outside St Peters Church (S:t Petri kyrka) in Malmö.
