The Rolling Stones came to Malmö a few days before their gigs at Baltiska Hallen the summer of 1965, and this photo shows Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Brian Jones hitting the boutiques of östergatan. But according to writers Ulf Clar n and Staffan Olander, the fun really started later that day when the band headed out to sea. The concerts had been arranged by Britt Wadner, the indomitable boss of pirate radio station Radio Syd. Her commitment to commercial radio was absolute she was sent to jail on three occasions for refusing to shut down Radio Syd and her powers of persuasion were compelling. The Stones had a gap in their schedule after playing Copenhagen in June, and Britt somehow convinced them to stay in Scandinavia a little longer. The band were ferried out to Cheeta II, the home of the offshore station anchored between Sweden and Denmark. They did a press conference and interview, during which Brian revealed the extent of his shopping spree: We spent an awful lot of money. We went to a lot of shops. I bought about 20 to 30 sweaters, three coats, and about six pairs of shoes . Despite this shopping spree, photos suggest he actually spent most of his time in Malmö wearing a Radio Syd t-shirt. The actual concerts were somewhat underwhelming they only played for about 20 minutes each time and the amplifiers weren t powerful to overcome the noise of the crowd. Nevertheless, the visit was a huge success for Britt and Radio Syd: What a marketing coup! was the headline in the city s Kvällens Post newspaper.
