When this picture was taken, in the 1960s, the buildings to your right had not yet been torn down. Most of the houses were built in the 1870s when Lund expanded. Nöden s official name was Nya staden (New Town), but it was called Nöden because of the poverty that afflicted many of the people that lived here Nöden roughly translates as dearth or hardship. There was a large Jewish population here, that had come here to escape persecution in Eastern Europe. There were both synagogues and a mikveh (a Jewish ritual bath) in this area. The residents of the white house in the middle of the photograph, number 9, were a Jewish family called Goldman. They lived there from the turn of the century until the 1970s.
