The Fredriks Church Stortorget

The Fredriks Church on Karlskrona s Great square was inaugurated in 1744 and is named after King Fredrik I.

The Fredriks Church on Karlskrona s Great square was inaugurated in 1744 and is named after King Fredrik I. The exterior is still not completed according to the original drawings by Nicodemus Tessin t.y. The towers do not have their spiers and the statues that would stand in the niches were never installed. During 2015 2018, an extensive interior renovation was carried out, under the direction of the Danish restoration architect Ole Drachmann, with the vision of creating a multifunctional church room in the baroque church. It is one of the most extensive renovations of a Swedish church ever. Did you know that The Great square (Stortorget) is one of Europe's largest paved squares and measures as much as 20,000 sqm incl. the buildings on it. Picture: Blekinge museum archives
