Ristorgsbacken - The Leaf market

The Leaf market is a traditional market that takes place the day before Midsummer's Eve on Stortorget and nearby streets. Similar festivities have existed in Karlskrona for about 220 years and from 1871 they have been called the Leaf market. In the past, people bought large bundles of birch leaves and giant oak leaf wreaths to decorate their homes for the Midsummer celebration. Even today, you can buy flower wreaths on Ristorgsbacken the day before Midsummer's Eve. In the background you can see the Town Hall, which since the picture was taken, around the turn of the last century, almost has double its size. Look for the characteristic blue collars among the visitors. Photo: Blekinge museum archives
