Alamedan Kungsbron

Since the middle of the 19th century, this street has been called Alamedan. It is said to be due to the fact that the Fleet's expedition ships, the frigate Josephine and the corvette Carlskrona, were in Gibraltar for periods in 1844. There the crew fell in love with an alameda and described it as "an invaluable promenade" with exotic trees and flowering shrubs. The word itself is distorted from Spanish and means "street lined with trees". However, it took until 1941 before the official name change was made, from östra Amiralitetsgatan to Alamedan. Where Alamedan converges with Kungsbron lies the beautiful Hollströmska ware house - but without the beautiful waiting cure for archipelago traffic that we can see in the picture. This would have been nice to keep as this place is still served by archipelago boats and tender boats from cruise ships. Note the absence of the Wachtmeister statue, which was inaugurated shortly after the picture was taken, during the city's 250th anniversary. Picture: Blekinge museum archives
