This spot, right where the bus shelters are today, used to look quite different at the start of the 20th century. Instead of bus shelters and concrete, there was a lush park, called Järnvägsparken ("the Railroad Park"). In the summer, travellers used to come here to cool off in the shadows of the trees, as they were waiting for their train. The trees also served a very practical need - they shielded the surrounding buildings from sparks coming from the trains as they pulled into the station. They were a kind of natural defense against fires, besides being very nice to look at, of course. The first picture is from the 1930's, and the second picture is even older - it's from the beginning of the 20th century. The building peeking through behind the trees is Nya hotellet ("the New Hotel"), which in the 1920's became the seat of the artisans' association.
