During the first half of the 20th century, there was a hotel here on Frykholmsgatan, called Hotel Temperance. You can see its sign in the middle of the photograph - the entrance is still there although now it leads to shops and caf s in Passagen, rather than a room for the night. As the name suggests, Hotel Temperance was a teetotal hotel, as opposed to Berns Hotel, for example. Teetotal establishments were popular during the 19th and early 20th century, as they were in other parts of the world. Teetotal movements were a reaction to widespread, unregulated copious drinking, and its destructive effects on individuals and society as a whole. This resulted in teetoal restaurants, hotels and other kinds of meeting places seeing a surge in popularity. If you take a closer look at picture number two, you can see a man looking out over the crowd fom one of the windows on the second floor. That's the crown prince, Gustaf Adolf, who himself was a teetotaller and in town to participate in an important meeting on the subject - a prince choosing to stay at Hotel Temperance rather than one of Hässleholm's fancier hotels was quite the political statement!
